What to Expect During a Family Photo Session on 30A

If you've never done a professional family photo session before (or it's been a while), it's completely normal to wonder what it's actually going to be like. Will someone tell you where to stand? Will it be awkward? Will your kids cooperate? Will you know what to do with your hands?

We hear these questions all the time, and the short answer is: it's going to be way more fun than you think. Here's what a typical session with us looks like from start to finish.

We'll Meet You at the Beach

We have a handful of preferred beach locations along 30A that we love shooting at, and we'll help you choose one that fits your family's vibe. Our most popular spot is Grayton Beach State Park. The dunes, the natural landscape, and the light there are hard to beat. But we shoot everywhere from Rosemary Beach to Inlet Beach, and if you'd rather meet at a spot closer to where you're staying, we're happy to make that work too.

Once you've filled out your questionnaire (which helps us plan the session around your family's size, ages, and energy), we'll confirm your location, time, and meeting spot.

When you arrive, we'll hang out for a few minutes before we get started. If we haven't met before, this is where we connect with your kiddos so everyone feels comfortable. We might ask your kids what their favorite game is or challenge them to a silly face contest. The goal is for them to see us as someone fun, not someone telling them what to do.

Most families say it feels more like hanging out with a friend than a stiff photo session. That's exactly what we're going for.

The Formal Shots Come First

We have a session flow we typically run through, and it starts with the posed "everyone looking and smiling" shots. We knock these out first while everyone still has their attention span and before anyone gets sandy or wet.

You don't need to worry about shot lists or figuring out groupings. We've got a whole list of combinations we work through based on your family's size and who's there. The whole family together, couples, siblings, grandparents with grandkids, all of it. If there's something specific you want that we might not think of, just let us know and we'll add it in. But otherwise, we've got it covered.

Even during the posed portion, we're cracking jokes and keeping things light. We want real laughs, not forced smiles. You might hear us say something ridiculous to get the toddler to look up, or we'll have Dad do something goofy to get a genuine reaction from the whole group. The "formal" shots still end up looking natural because the energy is relaxed.

If you've done family photos before where someone had you stand in a stiff line and say cheese for 45 minutes, this is not that.

Then the Fun Part Takes Over

Once we've got the formal stuff covered, we move into what we call the fun part, and honestly, this is where the magic happens.

We'll move into action prompts that shift the focus away from the camera and toward the connection between your family. Think piggyback rides, tickle fights, races down the beach, dancing in the sand, telling each other jokes. The goal is to get everyone moving and being silly and forgetting the camera is even there.

This is usually when the kids come alive. They're playing, the parents are laughing, and nobody is thinking about posing. We're right in the middle of it, whether we're chasing your toddler through the dunes at Watercolor or playing peekaboo behind a sea oat at Grayton Beach.

The photos from this part of the session are almost always the ones families end up putting on their walls. Not the formal lineup, but the moment where everyone cracked up because Dad tripped in the sand, or the one where your daughter is mid-air jumping off a dune, or the quiet one where Mom and Dad are watching the kids play and forgot anyone was watching.

Some Families Get in the Water

There's no expectation to get in the water during your session, but some families choose to, and it can make for some fun photos. If your kids want to splash around in the shallows, we're happy to capture it.

The sand along 30A is sugar-white and powdery, so it washes off easily and won't stain clothes. And if the little ones end up wet earlier than planned, that's fine. We roll with it. Some of our favorite photos have come from moments that weren't in the plan.

How Long Does It All Take?

Most of our sessions run about 30 to 45 minutes, depending on the session type you booked. That's plenty of time to get through everything, including the formal shots, the fun stuff, and water time if you want it.

We've found that 30-45 minutes is the sweet spot for families with young kids. Long enough to get a full gallery of variety, short enough that nobody melts down from being "on" for too long. We're reading the room the entire time, and if the energy is high and everyone is having a blast, we keep going. If the toddler is hitting a wall, we wrap things up on a high note.

You'll never feel rushed, and you'll never feel like we're dragging it out just to fill time.

What About the Weather?

Florida weather apps love to show rain icons, but the reality along 30A is usually a lot more cooperative than it looks. Even when it does rain, it's typically an afternoon shower that rolls through and moves on. We have very few sessions that are actually canceled due to weather. We're keeping an eye on it, and if anything needs to change, we'll let you know. We do this every day, so just be flexible and trust us to handle it.

If we do need to reschedule, there's no rebooking fee. We're not going to stress you out over something nobody can control.

What Happens After the Session

After we wrap, you're free to enjoy the rest of your evening. A lot of families grab ice cream in Seaside or head to dinner. Your job is done.

On our end, we head home and back everything up first, then get to work on your gallery. Turnaround is about one week, and when your gallery is ready, you'll get a link to view, download, and share everything.

We've even had families tell us they cried happy tears when they saw their gallery. Not because the photos are overly edited or artificially perfect, but because they look like their actual family having an actual good time. That's what we're going for.

Why 30A Makes Sessions Better

We're biased, but we think 30A is one of the best places in the country to do family photos. The light during golden hour is soft, warm, and incredibly flattering, and the sugar-white sand acts as a natural reflector that fills in shadows and makes skin tones glow.

Beyond the light, the beaches here offer variety that most beach destinations can't match. Every community along 30A has its own character, from the architecture and town squares to the coastal dune lakes, wooden boardwalks, and natural dune landscapes. And because 30A isn't a high-rise beach, the backgrounds stay clean and natural. No hotel towers in your family portraits.
