Where to Take Family Beach Photos on 30A (From a Local Photographer)
Where to take family beach photos on 30A:
- Grayton Beach State Park is our top recommendation for sunset sessions. Wide beach, a nature trail through the dunes, no condos in the background, and plenty of parking.
- Inlet Beach works well for both sunrise and sunset, with a large parking area and a boardwalk for photos.
- When families want Grayton Beach but need a sunrise session, we recommend Blue Mountain Beach.
- Any of the nine regional beach accesses along 30A work well for sunrise.
- We're happy to come to your location, so long as there's beach access and a guaranteed place for your photographer to park.
Where you take your family photos on 30A matters more than you might expect. The direction of the light, how crowded the beach gets at golden hour, whether there's parking for your photographer, and whether you need a permit all play a role. The right location makes the difference between a smooth session and a stressful one.
We've photographed thousands of families along 30A, and the best spot depends on where you're staying, what time of day your session is, and whether you want scenery beyond the beach. Here's a breakdown of the locations we recommend, the ones we don't, and how to decide.
Grayton Beach State Park
We photograph the majority of our sessions at Grayton Beach State Park, and it's easy to see why. The beach is wide and beautiful. There are no condos or businesses in the background. There's a nature trail that runs through the dunes and gives you a completely different set of backgrounds with greenery, shade, and a different feel from the open beach. It's one of the few places along 30A where you're allowed on the dunes. Everywhere else, they're off-limits.
The trail also helps with the sun. On longer sessions, you can start in the shade of the trail and ease into the open beach as the light softens. On windy days, the trail provides a windbreak. The way the park angles works well for golden hour light.
There's plenty of parking, bathrooms, showers, and easy access down to the water, even for families with strollers or mobility concerns. Most 30A rentals are a 10 to 20 minute drive. There is a $5 per car entry fee.
The park opens after sunrise, so Grayton Beach State Park is a sunset-only option.

Inlet Beach
Inlet Beach works for both sunrise and sunset. There's a large parking area, and the beach is set apart from the busier stretches of 30A.
There's a boardwalk that works well for photos and gives you a second backdrop beyond the sand. It sits away from the main beach, so you get some variety and a bit of a windbreak for the early part of your session.
Parking can get busy in the evenings because of bonfires and events, so arriving a few minutes early helps.

Blue Mountain Beach
When families want Grayton Beach State Park but need a sunrise session, Blue Mountain Beach is what we recommend. It's close to Grayton Beach State Park and centrally located along 30A, so drive times stay short.

Regional Beach Accesses Along 30A
South Walton has nine regional beach accesses spread along 30A, each with parking, restrooms, and showers:
- Miramar Beach — 2375 Scenic Gulf Dr, Miramar Beach, FL 32550
- Scenic Gulf Drive — 907 Scenic Gulf Dr, Miramar Beach, FL 32550
- Dune Allen — 5999 W Scenic Hwy 30A, Santa Rosa Beach, FL 32459
- Fort Panic — 5753 W Scenic Hwy 30A, Santa Rosa Beach, FL 32459
- Ed Walline — 4447 W Scenic Hwy 30A, Santa Rosa Beach, FL 32459
- Gulfview Heights — 186 Gulfview Heights St, Santa Rosa Beach, FL 32459
- Blue Mountain — 475 Blue Mountain Rd, Santa Rosa Beach, FL 32459
- Santa Clara — 3468 E Scenic Hwy 30A, Santa Rosa Beach, FL 32459
- Inlet Beach — 438 S Orange St, Inlet Beach, FL 32461
Any of these work well for sunrise. The beaches are quieter in the morning, there's plenty of parking, and the light is soft.
For sunset, most of the regional accesses get busy by golden hour. Foot traffic through the background of your photos becomes a factor. Inlet Beach handles sunset better because of the extra parking and the space between it and the busier areas. In the off-season, the regional accesses can work well for sunset too, since the beaches are much less crowded. For peak season sunset, we recommend Grayton Beach State Park or Inlet Beach.
We Can Come to Your Location
We're happy to meet you at your location, so long as you have beach access and a guaranteed place for your photographer to park. Parking along 30A is limited, and if there's no reliable spot, we can't guarantee we'll be there on time. If parking isn't available, most families end up switching to one of the other locations we recommend.
There are a few tradeoffs worth knowing about. You lose backdrop variety compared to a spot like Grayton Beach State Park, where the nature trail gives you that second set of backgrounds. Families at their rental also can be more likely to take a slower approach to getting ready, which can eat into session time. And the beach in front of most rentals gets busier at sunset than families expect. We end up pausing and waiting for people to pass through the background more often than we would at Grayton Beach State Park, where everyone is there for photos and tends to be respectful of each other's space.
None of that makes your location a bad choice. Plenty of families prefer it. Just worth knowing what to expect.
What We Don't Recommend
We don't recommend off-beach photography in communities like Rosemary Beach, Alys Beach, or Seaside. Professional photography in those areas requires additional permits and is typically pretty challenging to coordinate. We focus exclusively on family beach photos. If off-beach photography is something you're looking for, we're happy to refer you to another photographer who may be able to help.
We also don't recommend locations without reliable parking for your photographer. You don't want your photographer circling a parking lot during golden hour. That's happened exactly once, and it's not something we ever want to repeat.
We don't serve Destin, Miramar Beach, or Panama City Beach. If you're staying in any of those areas and want to come to 30A for your session, we'd love to have you and we'll find a location that works. For families coming from the east, Inlet Beach is usually the easiest meeting point. For families coming from the west, Grayton Beach State Park is typically the best fit.
Sunrise or Sunset
For sunset, Grayton Beach State Park. For sunrise, Blue Mountain Beach, Inlet Beach, or any of the nine regional beach accesses along 30A. Most families choose sunset. The light is warm, the evening energy works well for kids who've had a full beach day, and Grayton Beach State Park is available. Sunrise is a different experience. The beach is quieter, the light is softer, and kids who are early risers tend to have more energy in the morning. Grayton Beach isn't open for sunrise, so you're working with the regional accesses instead.
When you book with us, you'll select your preferred time of day and location in the questionnaire. If you want our input, we're happy to help you think through it.
How to Pick Your Location

If you're coming from outside 30A, we'll find the best location based on where you're traveling from.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a permit for beach photos on 30A?
For personal photos at public beach accesses and state parks, no. For commercial photography, a license is required for most photographers.
Can my photographer take photos at Rosemary Beach or Alys Beach?
On the beach, yes. Off-beach professional photography in those communities requires additional permits and has restrictions. We focus exclusively on beach photos.
What's the best beach for family photos on 30A?
For sunset, Grayton Beach State Park. For sunrise, Blue Mountain Beach and Inlet Beach are a couple of examples. Any of the nine regional beach accesses work well for sunrise.
Does it matter what time of day we take photos?
Yes. Sunrise and sunset are the two windows where the light is soft enough for great photos. Midday sun creates harsh shadows and squinting. Most families choose sunset, but sunrise is worth considering if you want a quieter beach.
Can we take photos at our location instead of a public beach?
We're happy to come to you, so long as there's beach access and a guaranteed place for your photographer to park. The tradeoff is less backdrop variety compared to a spot like Grayton Beach State Park.
What if we're staying in Destin or Panama City Beach but want 30A photos?
We'd love to have you. If you're willing to make the drive, we'll find a location that works. Grayton Beach State Park is usually the best fit for families coming from the west, and Inlet Beach works well for families coming from the east.
