How Far in Advance Should You Book a Family Photographer on 30A?
You're planning a family trip to 30A, and at some point between booking the rental house and figuring out dinner reservations, the thought hits: we should get family photos while we're there. The next question is almost always the same. How far ahead do I actually need to book?
The short answer: sooner than you think. Here's why timing matters and what we'd suggest based on when you're coming.
Book Your Photographer Right After You Book Your Rental
The families who have the smoothest booking experience are the ones who reach out right after they lock in their lodging. They've got their dates, they know when they're coming, and booking a photographer is the next thing on the list.
Those families get first choice of dates. They're not scrambling a week before their trip hoping something is available. They're picking the exact evening they want, locking it in, and moving on to the fun parts of trip planning.
If you're reading this and you've already booked your rental, now is the time to reach out. The longer you wait, the fewer options you'll have for your preferred date and time.
Peak Season Is No Joke
30A's peak season runs roughly from late May through mid-August, and this is when our calendar gets the tightest. Families are booking beach rentals, planning reunions, and coordinating trips around school schedules. The demand for family photography during these months is significantly higher than any other time of year.
To put it in perspective: during peak summer, we estimate that around 60% of the inquiries we receive for June and July are for dates we're already booked. That's more than half of the families reaching out who can't get their preferred date. June and July is not the time to reach out for a June or July session. April is.
If your trip falls during peak season and you want a sunset session on a specific date, we'd suggest reaching out at least 6-8 weeks before your trip. That doesn't mean we're completely booked until then. It means that to get your preferred date, your preferred time, and your preferred session type, you need that kind of lead time. The earlier you reach out, the more options you have.
Sunset Sessions Book Faster Than Sunrise
About two-thirds of our families choose sunset sessions, which makes sense. The golden hour light on 30A is incredible, everyone is already up and dressed from the day's activities, and it's a natural way to end the afternoon before heading to dinner.
But that popularity means sunset slots fill up faster, especially during peak months. Midweek sunset sessions (Tuesday through Thursday) are the first to go, because most families arrive on Saturday, settle in over the weekend, and want photos by midweek.
If you're flexible on timing, sunrise sessions are worth considering. The light is just as beautiful (some would argue better), the beach is completely empty, and the morning air along the Gulf is cool and calm. Families who book sunrise sessions are almost always glad they did. There's something about having the entire beach to yourselves that just feels special.
Weekends Are More Available Than You'd Think
Here's something that surprises most families: weekends on 30A are actually easier to book than midweek. Most vacationers are looking for Tuesday through Thursday sessions, which means Saturday and Sunday tend to have more openings.
If you're flexible on the day of the week and don't mind doing photos on a Saturday or Sunday evening, you'll have an easier time finding availability, even during peak summer.
Spring and Fall Still Book Up
If your trip is during the spring (March through May) or fall (September through November), you're not competing with the summer rush, but don't assume the calendar is wide open. We stay busy year-round, and popular dates still fill up, especially around spring break weeks and fall holidays.
We'd suggest reaching out 3-4 weeks in advance during these months to make sure you get the date you want. We'll do our best to work with you regardless of when you reach out, but earlier is always better.
Spring and fall on 30A are underrated for family photos. The light is softer, the temperatures are more comfortable, the beaches are less crowded, and the colors in the sky tend to be more dramatic. Fall sessions at Alys Beach and Inlet Beach, with the warm afternoon light and cooler air, produce some of our most beautiful galleries all year.
Winter sessions (December through February) are the quietest stretch, but we'd still suggest reaching out a couple of weeks ahead to lock in your date. The light is low and golden even in the middle of the afternoon, and the beaches are practically empty.
Large Groups Need More Lead Time
If you're coordinating a multi-family session, whether it's 10 people or 40, the reason to book early isn't about us. It's about you. Getting that many people to agree on a date, coordinate schedules, confirm who's coming, and plan outfits takes time. The more people involved, the longer that process takes.
For summer reunions on 30A, we'd suggest reaching out 3-4 months in advance. Many of the families we photograph for reunions at Santa Rosa Beach and Seaside start the conversation in early spring for a July or August session. That gives everyone enough time to coordinate without the last-minute scramble.
Extended family and multi-family sessions are one of our specialties, and the families who book early have a much easier time pulling everything together.
What If We're Already Booked on Your Date?
It happens, especially during peak season. If your preferred date is taken, the best thing you can do is be flexible. We'll do the same.
Maybe we can't do Wednesday sunset, but Thursday works. Maybe sunset is full, but we can fit you in for a sunrise session the next morning. Maybe we can shift some things around and make room. The more flexibility you have with day and time, the more we can work with you.
Reach out anyway and let us know your dates. Even if your first choice is taken, we can usually figure something out. Being open to different days or sunrise sessions makes a huge difference.
The Difference Between Booking Early and Booking Late
A family that reaches out six months before their trip has a completely different booking experience than a family that reaches out six days before. Both will get great photos. Both will have a wonderful time. But the family that planned ahead picked the exact date and time they wanted, had months to coordinate outfits with their group, and showed up relaxed because everything was handled. The family that waited had fewer options and less time to prepare.
Neither approach is wrong. We'll make it work either way. But if getting your preferred date matters to you, earlier is always better.
When Should You Actually Reach Out?
Here's a simple guide based on when your trip is:
For summer trips (June-August), reach out 6-8 weeks before your trip. Earlier if you want a specific midweek sunset date or if you're booking a large group. For June and July specifically, reaching out in April gives you the best shot at your preferred date.
For spring and fall trips (March-May, September-November), 3-4 weeks gives you a good window. Popular dates still fill up, so don't wait until the last minute.
For winter trips (December-February), 2-3 weeks is usually comfortable.
For holiday weekends (July 4th, Memorial Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving week), treat these like peak summer and reach out 6-8 weeks in advance. These weeks book up fast regardless of the season.
